EMDR Therapy
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is an evidence based method to help people recover from trauma and other distressing life experiences, as well as overcome core negative beliefs, while installing more adaptive, positive beliefs.
Seeking A Different Way?
EMDR works using bilateral stimulation – engaging different parts of the brain in order to process through traumatic events, distressing memories and change negative core beliefs. The therapist will move their hand back and forth in front of client’s face asking the client to follow it with their eyes, tap on the client’s hands or knees, use buzzers or light devices or music in ear buds to achieve the bilateral stimulation.
Without going into details, that in some cases of talk therapy have been found to cause re-traumatization, we are able to reorganize events and beliefs, allowing the brain to process and heal, overcoming the immediate jump to the fight, flight, freeze response.
I have also seen success in using this process to change the negative self-talk that so many of us engage in, leading people to a place of greater self-love and joy. Many of these thoughts are tied to negative core beliefs that we have gathered, learned and reinforced over time, often subconsciously. Releasing and changing these negative core beliefs allows us to reach new levels of self-acceptance, growth, performance and success in all areas of our lives. The benefits of this are myriad. I’ve seen people finally commit to getting healthy, improve relationships, let go of toxic relationships and so much more. It’s amazing what we can do when we are no longer holding ourselves back!
